Fret Lessons: Guitar Tuning Styles & Techniques

Let's first take a look at the techniques involved in tuning you guitar. A good guitarist should be able to tune his/her guitar by ear which will come in time for the beginner. In the mean time, we can utilize technology to tune our guitar with a chromatic tuner. Check out this video to learn how to set our guitar into standard tuning using a chromatic tuner.



Now here is a technique you can use to tune your guitar by ear.



Here is a video that will give you the pitch of the low "E" string(6th string). You can match yours to this and then continue with the technique from above to tune the rest of your guitar.

Now let's take a look at some of the different styles that you can tune your guitar in.


Standard Tuning

e: 1st string
B: 2nd string
G: 3rd string
D: 4th string
A: 5th string
E: 6th string

Drop-D Tuning

e: 1st string
B: 2nd string
G: 3rd string
D: 4th string
A: 5th string
D: 6th string

*notice that the only string altered is the 6th string; we dropped from E to D, hence Drop-D
